Tiles & Survive — build, defend, survive. Play now on Windows
Tiles & Survive — FunPlus (official key visual)

In just a few months, Tiles & Survive has become one of the most talked-about free base-building games on PC. And for once, it is not just about the colourful graphics.

The difference comes down to one idea: in most games of the genre, you build in peace. Here, you build during the day, and at night something comes to take it all back. Every decision has a deadline.

That is why players are still at it a year later, while far louder releases have already disappeared.

The world is not given to you, you take it

You start on a single cleared tile. All around it is fog.

Every new tile costs resources, and becomes a permanent decision. More fields means more food — but also more perimeter to defend. More forest means more wood — but the forest is exactly where the zombies come from.

A developed base in Tiles & Survive: farms, sawmill, mine and power plant in the centre

This is the part that surprises new players. Elsewhere, the map is scenery. Here, it is a constant negotiation. Claiming a tile you cannot hold means losing in one night what took you four hours to build.

The upside is that territory is earned. When you finally catch sight of the coast, you remember the price of every tile between you and it.

Every night, the game takes back control

At sunset, everything shifts. You stop building and watch a wave gather at the edge of your territory.

Walls slow them down, towers thin them out, your heroes hold the line where it is thinnest. And there is always a weak spot, because three tiles ago you got greedy with the fields.

What makes the system work is that the night is short. It is not a twenty-minute defence phase: it is ninety seconds that decide the fate of a whole day of choices. And if you lose, you do not start from scratch — you rebuild, with less.

The game in real conditions — building, expanding and defending.

Heroes are earned by playing, not by paying

You recruit survivors, each with a role: builders who speed up construction, fighters who hold the walls, gatherers who work faster on certain terrain.

The usual fear with a free game is that the good characters sit behind a paywall. In practice, the ones the game gives you in the first week cover every role you need. What matters after that — levelling them, equipping them, positioning them — costs time, not money.

You will come across better-equipped players. You will not hit a point where the game stops until you pull out your credit card.

A survivor clears new ground: this is how you expand your territory.

The launch bonus changes your first hours

Free games concentrate their rewards at the start. This one is no exception, and it is worth knowing before you install.

The first days give you enough to skip most of the slow start, a pack of heroes, and a run of login rewards that pile up faster than the build times they are meant to cover. Starting now with the full bonus puts you several days ahead of a cold start.

That matters more than it seems: the thankless part of this game is the first hour. Anything that shortens it is the difference between giving up and reaching the moment the system really makes sense.

It runs on just about any PC

This is the practical reason a lot of players stay.

Tiles & Survive is a Windows game that does not demand a recent graphics card. The style is stylised rather than detailed, which keeps the picture smooth on a laptop or a machine that is a few years old.

And there is nothing to pay to try it: the game is completely free, with no upfront purchase and no trial period.

Our verdict

A base-builder with real teeth.

  • The day/night cycle gives every decision a deadline, something most games of the genre sorely lack
  • The early progression is generous: a free player quickly reaches the interesting part
  • Heroes and gear are earned by playing, with no paywall
  • It runs on modest hardware, so no recent PC required

Give it a little patience through the first hour. The moment the system clicks is the moment you understand why players are still here a year later.

How to get started — three steps, five minutes

The game is free, but you need to complete all three steps to play. It is quick, so you might as well know them in advance:

  1. Download the client on Windows — the file is light and it installs by itself
  2. Create your account — an email address is enough, no credit card or payment details required
  3. Log in — this is when the welcome bonus is credited to your account

The bonus only appears after that third step. Many players stop after installing and miss it without knowing.
