Most shooters reset when you die. You respawn, you requeue, and the only thing you lose is a few minutes.

Arena Breakout: Infinite works the other way. Everything you carry into a raid — your rifle, your armor, the ammo you spent an evening saving up for — is on the line. Get out alive and you keep it all, plus whatever you found. Die, and it belongs to whoever shot you.

That one rule is why a raid in this game feels nothing like a match in a regular shooter. And with Season 7 released on September 16, it is also the best moment in a year to start.

Here is what it actually plays like, and who should probably pass.

Every raid is a bet you place yourself

A raid starts before you load in. You pick what to bring: a cheap kit you can afford to lose, or your best gear because you want to win the fight.

Then you drop into a map with other players and AI soldiers, loot what you can, and head for an extraction point before the timer runs out. Reach it, and everything in your bag goes to your stash. Don't, and it is gone.

This is the part that hooks people. A firefight is not just about the kill — it is about what the other player is carrying, and what you stand to lose. Your heart rate goes up when you hear footsteps, because it actually matters.

And the good news for a new player: you choose how much to risk. Going in with a basic kit costs almost nothing, and it is how everyone learns the maps.

The gunplay is the real deal

Arena Breakout: Infinite is built on detailed ballistics. Armor has tiers, ammunition has tiers, and the match-up between the two decides a fight more than who saw whom first.

In practice, that means a cheap rifle with good ammunition beats an expensive rifle with bad ammunition. Once that clicks, the game stops feeling random and starts rewarding preparation.

The gunsmith is where most players lose their first evening. Every weapon can be rebuilt part by part — stock, barrel, grip, optics — and every change shows up in recoil and handling.

Season 7 added zombies — and a way to play without other players

This is the biggest update since the full release, and it changes who the game is for.

Infected Zone puts zombies into the regular raids on Farm, Valley and Airport. You still fight other players, but now there is a third side that attacks everyone. Six types of infected, a merchant you can trade with in the middle of a raid, and a lot more chaos.

Zombie Endless is the one that matters for new players. It is a co-op mode on Airport with no enemy players at all — just waves of infected that grow stronger over time. It unlocks at level 8, and it is the safest place in the game to learn how to shoot, move and manage your gear.

Season 7: the infected arrive in the raids, and the fight becomes three-sided.

The season also brought two new top-tier rifles (the A545 and the AK-15SC), new weapon attachments, and a balance change that caps the gear allowed in normal raids at tier 4. That cap is good news if you are just starting: the fully kitted veterans are pushed into the harder modes, instead of hunting beginners.

Starting now means you are not years behind

Extraction shooters have a reputation for punishing latecomers. Veterans know every corner, every loot spot, every sound.

Season 7 does not wipe progress — stash and character level carry over — so experienced players are still there. But the new gear caps and the PvE zombie mode give a new player two things that did not exist a month ago: raids where the top gear is not allowed, and a mode with no human opponents at all.

The economy helps too. You can sell almost everything you bring back, and the in-game currency (Koen) is earned by playing. A few careful raids are enough to afford a decent kit.

It is free — here is the honest part about money

Arena Breakout: Infinite costs nothing to download or play, on Steam or on the official launcher. There is no trial and no upfront purchase.

It does sell things, and you should know what. The main one is the secure case: a small container that keeps a few items safe even when you die. Every player gets a free one with two slots. Bigger cases are paid, and they are the single biggest advantage money buys in this game.

Our view: the free case is enough to learn the game and to enjoy it. You lose raids because of positioning and ammunition choice far more often than because of a case. But if seeing another player with a bigger case would ruin the game for you, it is better to know now.

Who should skip it

Two kinds of players will not enjoy this.

If you hate losing progress — if losing a rifle you spent an hour on makes you close the game for the night — the core loop will frustrate you more than it excites you. That loss is the whole point of the genre.

And if your PC is old, check before you install. The minimum is a GTX 960 or RX 5500 with 12 GB of RAM, the recommended setup is an RTX 2060 or RX 6600, and the download is around 70 GB. On PC it runs on Windows only, so Mac users are out.

Our verdict

A tense, serious shooter that finally has a proper door for new players.

  • Every raid has real stakes, which makes the fights more intense than any regular match
  • The gunplay is deep: armor, ammunition and weapon building actually matter
  • Season 7 is the best entry point in a year, with a zombie PvE mode and gear caps that protect beginners
  • It is free to play, and the free secure case is enough to learn and enjoy the game

Give it a few raids with a cheap kit. The first time you reach an extraction point with a full bag and someone else's rifle on your back, you will understand why people play nothing else.

How to get started — three steps

The game is free, but it is a large download, so it is worth knowing the steps in advance:

  1. Download the game for Windows — plan for around 70 GB of free disk space
  2. Install it and launch it — the first launch finishes the setup and creates your character
  3. Play your first raids with a cheap kit — learn the map, then reach level 8 to unlock the Zombie Endless mode
