War Thunder is one of the most content-dense free-to-play games out there — thousands of vehicles across ground forces, aviation, and naval, spanning nearly a century of military hardware. It's also one of the easiest games to burn out on if you approach the grind wrong. A huge share of new players quit somewhere around rank III or IV, not because the game got harder, but because they were researching the wrong things the wrong way. Here's how to avoid that.
Pick one nation and one vehicle type first
The tech tree spans multiple nations (USA, Germany, USSR, Britain, Japan, and more) and three separate vehicle types (ground, air, naval), each with its own research currency needs. New players routinely spread Research Points across two or three nations at once because everything looks interesting, and end up with nothing fully unlocked anywhere.
- Choose one nation to start. Germany and the USA are generally considered the most beginner-friendly lines — solid early tanks and aircraft with fewer glaring weaknesses than some of the more specialized trees like Japan's.
- Choose one vehicle type as your main focus — ground forces or aviation, not both. Naval is worth leaving until you're comfortable with the economy; it has its own steep learning curve and is best treated as a side project later.
- Resist unlocking vehicles you won't play. Every unresearched module and vehicle in your path drains Research Points from your active line. A focused single-nation, single-type grind gets you to good vehicles far faster than a scattered one.
Understand the difference between Research Points and Silver Lions
War Thunder splits progression into two currencies that new players frequently confuse:
- Research Points (RP) unlock the next vehicle or module in the tech tree. You earn these from matches, and they can be applied to whichever vehicle line you've set as your research focus.
- Silver Lions (SL) are what you actually spend to purchase the vehicle once it's researched, plus crew training, repairs, and ammunition.
The trap here is researching a vehicle you don't have enough Silver Lions to buy, or worse, buying a vehicle and then not having enough SL left over to repair it after a bad match. Keep a buffer of Silver Lions before you commit to unlocking your next tier — a beautifully researched tank you can't afford to field is worthless.
Choose your battle mode deliberately
War Thunder offers Arcade, Realistic, and Simulator battles, and this choice affects your grind speed as much as your skill development:
- Arcade Battles are the fastest way to earn RP and SL per hour early on, with more forgiving damage models and shorter matches. This is the right mode to learn vehicle handling and map layouts.
- Realistic Battles pay better per-match rewards once you know what you're doing, but punish positioning mistakes far more harshly — a single well-placed shot can end your vehicle. Move here once you're comfortable, not before.
- Simulator Battles are a dedicated niche for players who want cockpit view and full flight/drive models. Great fun, but a poor place to grind your first tech tree line — the learning curve competes directly with your progression speed.
If your goal is climbing the tech tree efficiently, spend your first twenty to thirty hours in Arcade, then transition key vehicles into Realistic once you understand angling, ammo types, and map sightlines.
Use Talismans and boosters on vehicles you'll actually keep
Premium account time and RP/SL boosters are tempting to activate the moment you buy them, but they're wasted if used on throwaway low-tier vehicles you'll research past in a session. A more efficient approach:
- Save boosters for a vehicle you plan to grind through multiple matches, not a one-off test drive.
- A Talisman (which converts a vehicle's SL earnings toward crew and repair discounts permanently) is worth it primarily on vehicles you expect to keep playing long-term — your favorite rank III or IV tank, not something you'll skip past in a week.
- Premium account time is most efficient when stacked with active play sessions, not activated and left idle. Turn it on right before a multi-hour session, not days before you actually sit down to grind.
Final tip
The fastest way to enjoy War Thunder's tech tree instead of resenting it is narrowing your focus early: one nation, one vehicle type, Arcade Battles until you're comfortable, and a Silver Lion buffer before every purchase. The game rewards patience and a plan far more than it rewards trying to unlock everything at once — the players who quit at rank III are almost always the ones who spread themselves too thin from the start.
