World of Tanks is about to get its biggest content drop of the year. Update 2.4, subtitled "Overdrive," brings six new Tier XI vehicles, a full rework of how light tanks are matched into battle, and a rebalance touching more than 30 vehicles across the tech tree. Wargaming has framed it as the update players have been building toward all year, and the scope backs that up.

Six New Tier XI Tanks Across Six Nations

The headline addition is a brand-new German heavy line, four vehicles deep, capped by the Tier XI Pz.Kpfw. Neu. Its signature feature is a Shell Calibration System that lets the tank fine-tune shell parameters on the fly to adapt to a specific target — a mechanic that pushes the line toward precision duels rather than raw brawling.

Five more Tier XI vehicles arrive alongside it, one per nation, each built around its own gimmick:

  • Vz. 63P — introduces an adaptive autoloader
  • BV-111 — brings alternative firing modes
  • CAV 71 — built around rocket-assisted shells
  • WZ-219 — leans on advanced reconnaissance tools
  • Ho-Ri Shugo — rounds out the set with its own distinct playstyle

On top of that, a new Tier X reward vehicle, the wheeled German medium Fossa VM68, becomes obtainable through a dedicated line of Personal Battle Missions rather than through the premium shop.

Light Tanks Get a Role Rework

The other major pillar of 2.4 is a structural change to how light tanks function in matchmaking. Every light tank is now sorted into one of three roles — Scout, Versatile, or Support — and the matchmaker uses that classification to build more symmetrical teams instead of relying purely on tier and vehicle type.

From Tier VII upward, teams are capped at two light tanks each, a direct response to games being decided by lopsided scouting advantage. More than 30 vehicles have been retuned to fit their new role cleanly, and Wargaming is also testing changes meant to cut down on repeated map appearances within a single session.

What Else Is Coming

Update 2.4 isn't just about new metal. The patch also includes:

  • Refreshed visual and sound effects aimed at making battles easier to read
  • A new "Year of the Phoenix" season for the Onslaught game mode
  • An expanded Personal Battle Missions operation covering Sector 3
  • A pre-battle Spotlight feature that highlights standout vehicles before the fight starts
  • Welcome-back rewards for players who have been away for 60 days or more

Between the new Tier XI arms race and a light tank rework that touches nearly every match, Update 2.4 is shaping up to shift the current meta more than any patch this year. Commanders should expect the biggest adjustment period to hit scouting and flanking play first, with the new German heavy line following close behind once players start climbing toward it.
