War Thunder gives you tanks, planes and ships in the same game, with an economy that quietly decides how much fun you have. New players usually pick the wrong entry point and quit at the mid-tier wall.

Pick one nation and one vehicle type

The trees are vast. Spreading across nations means everything progresses slowly and nothing feels rewarding. Choose one nation, one branch, and stay there until you reach the mid tiers.

For ground battles, Germany and the USSR have forgiving early lines. For air, the USA gives you aircraft that survive beginner mistakes.

Start in Arcade, learn in Realistic

Arcade Battles teach you the maps and the vehicles with generous aiming aids. Realistic Battles pay far better and are where the game actually lives. Move over once you stop dying in the first minute.

The mid-tier wall is an economy problem

Around rank III to IV, repair costs rise faster than your income. This is where players stall. Two things fix it:

  • Keep a full lineup of vehicles at the same rank, so one bad match does not end your session
  • Finish the daily and battle tasks, which pay more than an extra match does

Survive your first battles

Do not push the middle of the map at the start. Let first contact happen, then move. In a tank, use hull-down positions and fire from cover. In a plane, keep your altitude and never follow a diving target to the floor.

What to buy first

A backup vehicle and a talisman on the vehicle you enjoy, not premium ammunition. Crew skills, especially reload and repair, do more for your survival than any single upgrade.
